Mission: The South Carolina Project will build the scientific, technological, and educational capacity for the biofabrication of human organs by advancing intellectual and physical infrastructure.
Vision: Within the next decade, the South Carolina Project will engineer a branched vascular supply system.
The South Carolina Project is an alliance of 10 institutions of higher education in collaboration with South Carolina EPSCoR/IDeA. The alliance is engaging in cutting-edge research in the field of tissue biofabrication, which could eventually lead to the production of human organs.
2010 Conference on Communicating Science
Sponsored by NSF, The South Carolina Project for Organ Biofabrication, and SC EPSCoR/IDeA, the conference will be a forum for the discussion of modern methods to improve communication with the public and policy makers about the societal impact of scientific advances.
Keynotes will be presented by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson (Director of the Hayden Planetarium and the Host of NOVA scienceNOW) and Mr. Robert Krulwich (Co-host of WNYC’s RadioLab and NPR’s Science Correspondent). The conference will also have a panel of science journalists and concurrent sessions with experts in the field of science communication.
Abstracts are being accepted for presentations from faculty and students. Since the conference is focused on new methods for communicating complex or controversial scientific ideas to the general public and policy makers, various methods of presentation are encouraged (i.e., video, poster, music, etc). Five submissions will be selected for presentation to the full conference, and 35 will be selected for display/presentation during the “Multimedia/Poster” session. Prizes will be awarded in both categories.
The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Greenville, South Carolina on November 3-4, 2010. Registration for all participants is $200, if registration is submitted by October 11, 2010. Late registration will be $250 per participant. For more information about the speakers, travel arrangements, or to register, please visit http://www.CommunicatingScience2010.org. You can also find the conference on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ComSci2010 or on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/ComSci2010.
